The Palm Springs Date Shake

We found ourselves back in Palm Springs last week and after asking my Twitter followers what we missed last time, the consensus seemed to be: a date shake.

A date shake. Ok. I like dates. I like shakes. So after eating dinner at Wang’s (which I wrote about in this week’s newsletter), we found ourselves walking down the main drag of Palm Springs–there was a very cute street festival going on–and finding one of the more celebrated date shake destinations (according to a Google search): Palm Springs Fudge & Chocolates.

A Thin Mint Milkshake Recipe

When I heard that Doug and Bryan of The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and The Big Gay Ice Cream Shop were making a Thin Mint Milkshake, a part of me thought: “Whoah, I wonder how they make that?” I also thought: “I wish I lived in New York still so I could taste that.”

Then, the other day, after Craig and I took a hike in Bronson Canyon, we stopped into Gelson’s (our local grocery store) to pick up a few things and encountered a Girl Scout standing outside.

An Oscar & A Milkshake

It’s not every day that your friend wins an Oscar. But on Sunday night, our friend Luke (who went to film school with Craig) won an Oscar for his short film, “God of Love.” (You can watch it on iTunes here.)

For anyone who watched the Oscars, you’ll remember his speech (New York Magazine called it one of the evening’s best moments.) Luke gave me his permission to post the above photo on my blog….

The Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake at Stand

Friends don’t let friends go to Stand–the burger place on E. 12th Street–without ordering the toasted marshmallow milkshake. It fell upon me yesterday, after seeing “Synecdoche, NY” with Craig and his filmmaker friend David Russo (whose own movie, “The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle”, premiered at Sundance this year) to shepherd them both to Stand for burgers and, of course, the toasted marshmallow milkshake. I was so forceful on the latter front–“You’ve gotta get the toasted marshmallow milkshake,” I began; “It’s really one of the best milkshakes I’ve ever had”, I continued; “Aren’t you going to order it?” I begged when neither person ordered it–that my plan backfired: these two were going to need a more direct intervention. I ordered the milkshake for myself.
