A Fish & Finger Pie (This Is Not A Food Post)

Today I was reading Anthony Lane’s review of “Nowhere Boy” in The New Yorker and I came upon this paragraph:

“The only sexual charge of any force, to John’s intense discomfort, is that between mother and son; more routine is the sight of him with a schoolgril, helping himself to what ‘Penny Lane’ would later identify as finger pie.”

As any fan of The Beatles knows, the lyric referenced is from the jolly, bouncy song Paul McCartney wrote about where he grew up (lovingly performed by Elvis Costello in the above clip.) The implication here, though, seems to be that “fish and finger pie” is a reference to…well…a sexual act.
