I’m about to make dinner, but after discovering “On The Town” on Spotify this morning I found myself Googling the show (it’s one of Leonard Bernstein’s first musicals) and reading about Lea Delaria’s scene-stealing performance of the song “I Can Cook Too” in the 1998 revival. There it is above and I liked it so much, I had to share it here. Also: I think it’d make a swell theme song for a cooking show.
I remember seeing this show on Broadway – I was in high school and loved loved loved it. I remember reading the Playbill over and over and convulsing in laughter – Lea DeLaria’s bio said that she sprang fully formed from the head of Zeus, and the actor playing her target, Chip (who’s now Mitchell on Modern Family) listed extensive Broadway credits, including several Starbucks location and the Circle in the Square Theater gift shop. Funny the highly specific things you remember… thanks for the memory :)
You should seek out Barbara Cook’s performance of this song. It’s on one of her DVD’s and is memorable.
