Server Switch

You know how sometimes you go to high school and you’re the world’s biggest nerd and you only have three people to sit with and you still drink juice out of a juice box? But then in 4th period English class you say something really funny and the cool kids ask you to sit with them the next day and more kids ask you to sit with them and before you know it the whole school is sitting around you at lunch?

Ok, I don’t know what that’s like at all, but my server certainly does! When my web guru Ben Lim put me on the server I’m currently on I was getting modest traffic, but now I’m getting so much traffic it keeps crashing the server which is why the site sometimes doesn’t load when you try to load it. So, in T-Minus 15 minutes, we’re going to begin the Big Server Switch to a swifter more spacious server that’ll ensure the site will always load and all kids–popular, unpopular, even the ones with headgear–can sit with us when we eat. There won’t be any more blogging here this week, but when you come back Monday, a bright shiny server awaits you.

All right, Ben: Let the Great Server Switch commence!

  1. While you’re waiting for your new server to kick in, you’ll probably have some time on your hands. And what goes better with time on your hands than some chocolates? How about a salted caramel truffle encrusted with pretzel bits (ah-may-zing)from one of NYC’s newest chocolatiers, Bespoke Chocolates??

No, I’m not in PR, I’m just a loyal lurker, and Bespoke is owned and operated by my good friend Rachel Zoe Insler, who is incredibly cool and an awesome chocolatess. I can’t help but want to spread the word and help her succeed.

The shop is on Extra Place, a tiny street between Bowery and 2nd Avenue off East 1st Street. Its directly across from the entrance to the Avalon Bowery building – you know, in case you’re out wandering on a lovely Saturday afternoon sometime soon and find your sweet tooth calling… Have a great weekend!

  2. Ah, it’s a rite of passage – the great Server Switch – your blog as indeed come of age, kudos! :)

  3. Personally, I trust Anthony Bourdain when he says that foie gras isn’t as cruel as everyone thinks, but I cringe when I think of the flak you’re going to get for that candy heart in the banner. I noticed when you wrote about your non-organic chicken backs, someone immediately slammed you in the comments.

  4. Good luck with the move! I’ve had to move server a couple of times myself, and it’s always been an .. interesting.. experience.

For what it’s worth, I found one thing that lightened my server’s load significantly (aside from a good caching program) was to move the email to an outside service like Google Apps. Server load went from 0.8 average to less than 0.3 :)
