New York Dining Tips From Two T.V. Characters

I’ve become addicted to “The Office” (the American version). I think it’s the best comedy on TV. Having just watched the entire first and second seasons on iTunes, I share with you a moment from when Michael Scott comes to New York (The Valentine’s Day episode.) He narrates from Times Square.

Michael: “Most people, when they come to New York, they go straight to the Empire State Building. That’s very touristy, I come here. Great places to eat…We have Bubba Gump Shrimp and Red Lobster down there. Ya know? This is the heart of civilization right here!”

This comes right after the scene where he says he loves authentic New York pizza and then goes into a Sbarro.

On a different front, on last night’s Sopranos, a scene begins with Tony–who is out of his coma–saying to Carmella: “The lobster roll…Pearl Oyster Bar.” One can only presume that the question was: “What do you want to eat first when you get out of the hospital?” I wonder how many managers and waiters from Pearl got excited when they heard that. I happened to walk by there today at lunch and the place was super busy, even on a Monday. Luckily, I’ve already experienced the wonder of their lobster roll. It’s nice to know I share Tony’s taste in food, if not his taste for murder and whores.

  1. I’m just glad Tony is well enough to think about eating solid foods again. I was worried there for awhile I love the Office too. BOTH versions!

  2. AG, I actually thought of you during that “Office” episode — “Dear god, Sbarro?! Isn’t there some hole in the wall in Adam’s little food guide nearby??” >:P Love the show, the one where Dwight gets a concussion is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on TV.

  3. I LOVE the office too. Do you think that Americans wouldn’t find the English one set in Slough funny? And that is what they had to make an American version?

  4. What do you think of Marys Fish Camp, have you ever been there? I understand Mary used to work for Rebecca at Pearl Oyster Bar and they had a falling out-ergo, Mary’s own place.

  5. Damn, I love the lobster roll at Pearl Oyster Bar. My wife and I were in NYC last year, and she made sure we stopped by for lunch one day. My mouth is watering at the thought.

What can I say about The Office except that I think it’s one of the funniest shows on TV? It’s been a pleasant surprise to find a US remake of a British show that, at least in my opinion, lives up to the original.

  6. The Office really is the best comedy on (US) television.

Tejal – as an American, I love the English version. The American version stayed close to the storylines, in the beginning, but it’s really taken off on it’s own, so they really do seem like two entirely separate shows.

  7. We were LOL at Tony’s Pearl Oyster remark. Did you notice that he called it Pearl’s Oyster Bar? I just can’t picture Tony Soprano waiting on line on Cornelia Street. I love that place. Just hope it isn’t MORE popular than ever now because of the Soprano’s connection.

  8. Kim: “The Office” is on hiatus while Steve Carell (Michael) is filming a sequel to “Bruce Almighty” called “Evan Almighty”. That should be hilarious!

I think only food people laughed at the Sbarro part of the episode, because my family didn’t understand why I was cracking up.

  9. Oh, I dunno…On my last trip to NYC from my home in Oregon I visited the Pearl and had the highly recommended lobster roll, my first…was quite disappointed. Geez, it was just chunks of lobster, homemade mayo, celery and onion…just like I make my tuna salad at home except for lobster instead of tuna. The rolls weren’t very special either. And it was expensive.
