Butterflies and Mushrooms
[Hey, this is Adam The Amateur Gourmet. I'm on vacation in Barcelona, Spain and while I'm gone I've asked some awesome people to fill in for me. Today is talented female filmmaker day, with our first post from the incredibly accomplished, incredibly gifted writer/director Kim Spurlock. This post is an amazing guide to New York's best movie theater butterflies and mushrooms. I'll let Kim explain. Take it away, Kim!] It occurs to me that the title of this entry might lead you to believe that I will be frying up some funky fungi. Nothing doing. For one thing, psilocybin is illegal. Besides, no amount of butter or salt or good intentions is going to make those magic mushrooms melt in your mouth. Or at least that’s what I hear. Luckily, the same can’t be said for popcorn!...
True Adolescents To Premiere at SXSW
Many of you know that my boyfriend Craig (whose birthday is today) is a film director who wrote and directed his first feature, True Adolescents, two summers ago in the Pacific Northwest. Now--at last!--the movie is having its premiere: it was announced today that Craig's movie is one of only 7 movies (out of 750 submissions) in the Narrative Features competition at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. And so, yes, that means we're heading to Austin in March (my first time in Texas!) and we hope to see YOU at his screening. But in the meantime, please join the True Adolescents fan page on Facebook, bookmark the True Adolescents website, and make the awesome poster (created by celebrated comic book artist Cliff Chiang) your desktop image. Also: root for Melissa Leo at the Oscars--she's in Craig's movie and now she's up for Best Actress for "Frozen River." This is going to be an exciting year and I'll definitely keep you posted here as our journey into the glamorous world of Hollywood--or, rather, Independent Cinema--begins....
Adam "The Amateur" vs. Randy "The Ram"
I take it most of you are familiar now with "The Wrestler," the sensational new movie from Darren Aronofsky and starring the irascible Mickey Rourke? What many of you might not know is that many of the characters who show up frequently on this blog had a hand in making the movie. First and foremost is my friend Mark, Diana's betrothed; remember the engagement dinner I cooked for them? And our trip to Rhode Island? Well Mark co-produced "The Wrestler." Many of our conversations over the past year were conversations about all the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that went on making the movie. When we talked about it, we never knew it would be this big; and now it's huge. And I'm very proud of Mark: we saw the movie with him on opening night, and it really blew me away. We applauded when his name showed up in the credits....
Movies That Induce Specific Food Cravings
I just saw Woody Allen's newest movie, "Vicky Christina Barcelona", and it induced three reactions: (1) Could this be? A new Woody Allen movie that I genuinely love and can imagine seeing again and again because I love it so much; (2) Please, God, put me on a plane to Barcelona ASAP; and (3) I need a glass of Spanish wine. right. now. Seriously. I came home and begged Craig to go with me across the street to the wine bar so I could have a glass of Spanish wine but he said "no" and fell asleep on the couch. Have you ever had a movie induce a specific food craving? Is a wine craving a food craving? I don't know, but if you live in Park Slope and want a glass of Spanish wine throw rocks at my window and I'll meet you across the street. Oh no, I think the wine bar's closed. May my dreams be filled with tapas, Javier Bardem, and Spanish wine. Lots and lots of it....
My Favorite Food Movie: Defending Your Life
Favorite food movies are like days of the week; for all intents and purposes, there are only seven of them. 1. Ratatouille; 2. Eat Drink Man Woman; 3. Tampopo; 4. Chocolat; 5. Babette's Feast; 6. Big Night; 7. Like Water For Chocolate. [This Serious Eats thread seems to confirm that.] I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but as much as I like many of the movies on that list, none of them really capture what it is about food that I love. It wasn't until this weekend, really, when we popped in one of my favorite movies of all time, "Defending Your Life" with Albert Brooks, that I realized that this movie--a movie about life after death--may in fact be my favorite food movie of all time, even though it's not a movie about food....
