Strange Crust (Or How I Learned To Love British Pies)

[Hey, this is Adam The Amateur Gourmet. I'm on vacation in Barcelona, Spain and while I'm gone I've asked some awesome people to fill in for me. Today we continue British Guest Poster Day with someone who isn't really British, but who recently moved to England. My friend Tray Butler, as you'll see below, is an incredibly talented illustrator as well as the author of "Moon Atlanta," a travel handbook that'll be published by Avalon Travel this fall. You can see more of his work at trayb.com. Take it away, Tray!]...

The Best Meal of My Dad's Life Was At The Gramercy Tavern

A few weeks ago I dined with my family at The Gramercy Tavern. Amanda Dell, the Maître d’, recognized me from my blog and when we sat down the server told us that the chef would like to cook a special meal for us. At the end of it, my dad, unprovoked, said that it was the best meal of his life. Here's a comic book reenactment. [Note: This was actually more than a month ago, so I can't remember many of the dishes--especially since we didn't have menus! My apologies.]...

The Indoctrination of a New New Yorker

You guys remember Lauren, don't you? She was there at the dawn of this blog; my law school roommate in Atlanta who oversaw all my initial disasters and experiments in the kitchen. Surely you remember her from this sourdough bread video? When we graduated school, I moved to New York and she made the ridiculous mistake of moving to Washington DC. (Remember this video from when I visited her there?) Well, the fantastic news is she's finally come to her senses and moved back to where she grew up, New York, New York and I took it upon myself to re-indoctrinate her as an official New Yorker. For anyone else thinking of moving to New York, here are the official steps [click to enlarge]: Welcome to New York, Lauren! Don't forget to ask for a doggie bag.......

How To Bribe Your Friends With Cake To Get Them To Watch Your Cat

[Click to enlarge.] You must believe me, this cake is truly a powerful cake. It's the best Red Velvet I've had, and I've had quite a few. I got the recipe from Smitten Kitchen (a new favorite site; beautiful, with great recipes) and I fully support Deb's icing calculations. It seems like too little when you make it, but it's just enough to ice the cake and the end result is an icing/cake ratio that's perfectly balanced. So if you need to bribe some catsitters, or you just want to treat yourself to a Southern delicacy, do it Red Velvet style. You won't regret it....
