A Big Secret Project Revealed: Presenting, Serious Eats

IMG_1.JPG

Where's Oliver Stone when you need him? It's time to unpack a conspiracy. Famed food writer Ed Levine has conspired to create one of the most promising food sites on the web. He's got Jeffrey Steingarten. He's got Daniel Boulud. He's got Susie Essman from "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And Jane and Michael Stern. And Meg. And Adam. And, would you believe it, he's got me.

That's right, I am proud to call myself a proud participant of Serious Eats, Ed's "dream" food website which will launch Monday. I'm going to be a regular contributor with exclusive columns, stories and posts that you'll only be able to read there (don't worry, I'll still be charming you here too.)

Now's your chance to get a sneak peek. To check it out, go to:

http://preview.seriouseats.com/

And enter
Username: serious
Password: eater

Please sign up and register over the weekend and on Monday when it launches for real, you'll already be a member of what promises to be one of the coolest, most exciting food sites on the web.

Menu For Hope III

Many of you may already be aware that Pim's massive food blog fundraiser "Menu For Hope III" is on its way around the bend once more. Last year she raised $17,000 for UNICEF; this year she's raising money for the UN's World Food Programme. Many of your favorite food blogs are participating, offering food prizes to raffle and help raise money. If you have a food blog and would like to raffle something off, it's not too late. E-mail your intended prize (with pictures and descriptions) to the appropriate blog host by this Saturday the 9th. The appropriate blog hosts are:

US East Coast: Me! I'm the host with the most, baby.

US West Coast: Sam of Becks & Posh

US (the rest): Kalyn of Kalyn's Kitchen

Canada:Jasmine of Cardamom Addict

Europe (and the UK): David of Davidlebovitz.com

Latin America: Melissa of the Cooking Diva

Asia Pacific: Helen of Grab Your Fork

Everyone else, stay tuned and look forward to some awesome prizes. Thanks to Pim in advance for bringing this all together, yet again.

Menu For Hope III: My Two Prizes--New York In A Box (UE14) & Lunch At Your Office (UE15)

IMG_1.JPG

Hello! It's time for Pim's extraordinary fundraiser, Menu For Hope III, where we raise money for the UN Food Programme. In a moment, I'll do the East Coast round-up of all that the East Coast blogs have to offer. But first, I need to do MY prize post---and here it is. So here are my prizes!

UE14: New York In A Box
IMG_2.JPG

I, The Amateur Gourmet, will collect for you the finest that New York has to offer: cheese from Murray's cheese, a chocolate chip cookie from the Levain bakery, an onion bialy from Kossar's, salami from Katz's, smoked fish from Russ & Daughter's, teas and dried goods from Chinatown, and much much more. Not only that, but I will document the creation of this box in a video on my site that will show you all that went into it. It will be shipped overnight and when you get it, your account of getting it and eating it (with pictures, hopefully) will be prominently posted. A perfect prize for anyone who wishes to taste all the foods I write about but who doesn't live anywhere close to New York City!

This prize is limited to non-New Yorkers only.

UE15: An Amateur Gourmet Lunch At Work
IMG_3.JPG

For those that work in New York City, I, The Amateur Gourmet, will cook for you a gourmet lunch that I will document on my site. Then I will deliver this lunch to you at work, to the delight of all your friends and co-workers. The delivery of this food will also be heavily documented and posted on my site in comic book format, creating an online souvenir of a heavenly meal that you will never forget!

Limited to those who work in NYC only.

All right, those are my prizes! Here's how to bid for them (instructions lifted from Chez Pim):

1. Choose a prize or prizes of your choice from our Menu for Hope.

2. Go to the donation site at http://www.firstgiving.com/menuforhopeIII and make a donation.

3. Each $10 you donate will give you one raffle ticket toward a prize of your choice. Please specify which prize you'd like in the 'Personal Message' section in the donation form when confirming your donation. You must write-in how many tickets per prize, and please use the prize codeā€”for example, a donation of $50 can be 2 tickets for EU01 and 3 for EU02. (Please use the double-digits, not EU1, but EU01.)

4. If your company matches your charity donation, please check the box and fill in the information so we could claim the corporate match.

5. Please allow us to see your email address so that we could contact you in case you win. Your email address will not be shared with anyone.

Check back on Chez Pim on January 15 for the results of the raffle.

Then do the following:

2. Make a donation, each $10 will give you one raffle ticket toward a prize of your choice. Please specify which prize or prizes you'd like in the 'Personal Message' section in the donation form when confirming your donation. Do tell us how many tickets per prize, and please use the prize code -for example, a donation of $50 can be 2 tickets for UW01 and 3 for UW02.

3. If your company matches your charity donation, please remember to check the box and fill in the information so we could claim the corporate match.

And Even More Prizes...

Menu For Hope III is chugging along (we've crossed the $10,000 mark now) and it's only day three. Don't forget about my luscious prizes: my box of New York (UE14) has a few bidders, but an Amateur Gourmet lunch at your office (UE15) only has one. Where are you readers? Don't you want me to make you lunch? And to bring it to your work? Imagine how delicious that would be. I would spare no expense---I still have some foie gras torchon turning black in my fridge, don't you want some of that? Just kidding. But speaking of foie gras...

Menu For Hope III East Coast Prize Review

Just in case it got confusing with the multiple prize posts, here's a quick guide to the prizes available to you from all the East Coast bloggers. And just in case you weren't paying attention, we've already passed last year's $17,000 mark. What a remarkable first week! (And just in case you need further motivation, check out the videos on Pim's site---they'll remind you of what this campaign is really about.)

Final Prize Push

Menu For Hope is winding down (the last day is Friday) and there are still plenty of prizes worth bidding on. Here are some developments:

- Michael Ruhlman updates his prize with a gift box of charcuterie from Justin Servino of Servino's Community Butcher in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, shipping of the meat is limited to the U.S. only. But anyone worldwide can claim the book! The prize code is UE22.

- There's a new prize: UE36--Dinner for Four at Centrico in New York. Prize includes a free cocktail per person and a copy of chef Aaron Sanchez's book La Comida Del Barrio. I may bid on this one myself!

- Even though he's listed with the wine bloggers, Lenn of Lenndevours wants me to point you to some of his fabulous East Coast prizes:

* WB19: A Romantic Getaway For Long Island Wine Lovers
* WB20: Learn About And Taste Wines on Long Island
* WB21: Taste The North Fork of Long Island
* WB22: personal Tour of Long Island Wine Country

Those are really snazzy prizes and great for anyone who lives in New York and wants a great getaway. Hey, I need a great getaway. Maybe I'll bid on them too!

New York in a Box

Remember when Pim did Menu for Hope III and I auctioned off New York in a Box, promising to send the winner a package filled with New York goodies? And also promising to make a video of the goodies I was going to send? Well, it's been a few months but I finally came through for the winner: Amanda P. in Seattle. Here's the video I made her and here's her Flickr page with New York in a Box pictures. Thanks for being so patient, Amanda!
