A Real Crunchy Treat 1
Have you ever seen the movie “The Namesake” with Kal Penn? There’s a scene in the movie where the newly married Ashima Ganguli looks at her plain bowl of corn flakes and decides to spice it up a bit. I’m not sure if it’s because it was tasteless or because she was pregnant but I think her hormones made her do it. She chops up some onions and adds some masala to the cereal. I think it reminded her of the cooking back home in India.
Every time my mom makes her famous Corn Flakes mixture, I get reminded of the movie. The snack is so simple and easy that anyone can make it and enjoy.

A Real Crunchy Treat 2
7 ounces Corn Flakes cereal box
handful of Peanuts/ cashews
handful of Roasted channa dal
½ teaspoon Red Chilli powder
1 teaspoon Coriander powder (dhania), optional
1 teaspoon Salt (as per your taste)
½ teaspoon Citric Acid powder, optional
1 teaspoon Confectioner’s sugar
4 tablespoons Vegetable oil
Step 1: Heat oil in a small saucepan on medium heat and fry the peanuts/cashews until golden brown.
Step 2: Remove from heat and add coriander powder, salt and citric acid and mix well.
Step 3: Empty the cornflakes into a microwavable contrainer and add the roasted channa dal. Then transfer the seasoning (coriander powder, salt & citric acid) into it and mix well.
Step 4: Reduce the power level on the microwave oven to 70% power and microwave for just two minutes. (Please note that heating time varies from each microwave oven).
Step 5: Remove from the microwave oven and sprinkle the confectioner’s sugar over using a metal sieve and mix well. When it cools down, store it in a tight container to keep it from going stale.
