Animal Protein Cake

The world’s first synthetic meat burger made its debut today and the verdict is in. Well sort of: according to this Guardian article, the tasters were impressed if not quite thrilled. “I was expecting the texture to be more soft,” said Hanni Rützler of the Future Food Studio. Still, even if the burger doesn’t wet your appetite there’s no denying how much good a synthetic burger could do for our deeply damaged food system. The more important question is: would YOU eat it?

  1. Frankly, the whole idea just scares me. As a meat-eater turned vegetarian, I’d rather just skip the meat altogether!

  2. Sure, I’d try it. I imagine it’s probably healthier for you than the frozen burger patties at the supermarket or fast food chains, and maybe they’ll eventually taste better than the best burgers you can find.

    We have the luxury of being squeamish and afraid of science in relatively well off countries, but it seems really selfish to me for us to write this off with a knee-jerk reaction. If they find a way to mass produce this at a low cost, it would be huge for world hunger and animal cruelty. I’m excited to see what comes from it.
